4/13: a mini-anthology

One of my students and I had been emailing about poets lately. I recommended Frank Bidart's poems to him, and he mentioned Thom Gunn's poems to me. Today he gave me photocopies of some of Gunn's poems so I could read them at my leisure. An unexpected gift.

I had a long and intense talk with my brother today, about our father and his death. We have never really talked about it like this, and it's been 17 years since he died. It was good for both of us, especially my brother, who is often unhappy, so I'm very glad.

Oh, Sienna, I'm glad for your good thing, too. It's so good for you & your brother, I'm sure, and I really appreciate your sharing it here.

... speaking of intense talk... I got a call from my father from overseas last night... We were never very close, and I only got to deal with the absence of a true relationship between us when I settled down and had a family of my own... He has just learnt that he is very ill... and he called me, the one person he absolutely never shared any secret, any issue of his with. I am not sure how to deal with this yet... but I do know that I am grateful and very moved... Life and Love have its ways...

Hello, Meri--The strange workings of life and love indeed. I'm sad for your father's illness, but I'm glad that he called you and the two of you were able to talk. Sometimes I think that, as adults, our relationships with our parents don't have much room to change, that it's all been set in stone from our childhood. It's a good thing when a page gets turned, a new chapter started. Thanks for the reminder that it's possible.

And, Elaine, it sounds like your recovery is continuing!
