3/30: dogwoods

In the waves of blooms that are spring, it's now the dogwoods' turn. The blossoms are yellowish because they're new; over the next few weeks they'll whiten before they give way to whatever comes next.

Two things: At 8:30 this morning I saw a red-shouldered hawk in the empty field behind our house. I ran for the binoculars and followed the guy for about 20 minutes. Now I know where to look!

Second: I was at Juvenile Hall this afternoon, drawing with a group of boys, and I happened to notice the librarian had placed the d'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths on the book cart. Of course I thought of you! And I was thrilled to see the kids had access to something so, well, kid-like and eternal. I mean this unit is full of gang members, boys I don't usually associate with being devotees of Greek mythology!

I received a beautiful postcard in the mail today...paint blot flowers in the bright colours that I love and that make me happy!

I'd love to see a picture of your Dogwood if you can post it, that is our Provincial flower and while it is wild in many areas of BC it will not grow here. I'd like to try a commercial type that may be more winter hardy some day.

Dusty I love getting postcards and I got 2 today, one of a hen and chicks from Japan and one of a duckling from Finland. Both through Postcrossing, I love the program, so much fun to give and receive.

Great to see three messages here when I arrived!

When I have time, I'll try to photograph the dogwoods in our woods. I think it's really hard for me to capture their magic with my lens....

Thanks, Dusty, for letting me know the postcard arrived, and I'm glad you like it!

And I'm so glad about your seeing the d'Aulaires' book at Juvenile Hall, Barbara! The illustrations in it are so dynamic and creative (in my opinion).

Oh, Barbara--also "congratulations" on your tracking of the hawk!

One of the perks of my job is that my desk looks over the large park that is part of the provincial legislature, and there are red-tailed hawks in the park in the middle of the city, which I often see.

Hi, Dusty--I get to see hawks when I'm at home, but that's because I live in the woods outside town. It's wild to see them in your context: hawks juxtaposed with city architecture.
