Life in late capitalism can be vexing, alienating, fragmenting, and otherwise frustrating. There are many wonderful things in my life, but I'm more likely to talk about what's bad rather than what's good. I'm going to try to post one good thing here each day, and if you would join in by adding a good thing from your day in the comments, I'd love it--I'd absolutely love it. --RR
6/23: time with a page
I saw the animated film The Secret of Kells a few months ago, and I really enjoyed it--it is visually amazing. Though it's a very fictional view of The Book of Kells, the movie made me want to incorporate The Book of Kells somehow in my Vulgate class this fall. Today I spent time with a high-quality photograph of single page and worked through its Latin. I had a good time, and I think my students will have a good time with it, too.
I saw the actual Book of Kells in Ireland a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely! Medieval manuscripts are so awesome! ;-)
ReplyDeleteIn fact, I have just returned from a study trip to St. Gall in Switzerland where we were allowed to read and work with the actual codices. Very impressive indeed. Did you know that the library had most of their manuscripts digitalized as a part of the e-codices project (http://www.e-codices.unifr.ch/)?
I've not been to Ireland, Barbara (lucky you!), but if ever I go, I hope to see The Book of Kells while there.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you, liathlannwindvogel, for the URL--what a great collection! My students and I will definitely use some of these resources.
