3/24: out before dark

One Wednesday each month we have an evening faculty meeting. Tonight was the night, but it only lasted 35 minutes! There was still some sunlight by the time I got home, and Chris and I took a walk along the ridge. We spotted more native plum trees (and enjoyed their blossoms' amazing scent), were happy to see that our spirea buds had burst open, and even came across our first snake of the season. It was a baby copperhead and kind of cute; we're calling it a "copperlette" or a "penny snake."

A few weeks ago I responded to a newspaper call-out for volunteers to monitor one of our local parks - 85 acres. It's a gang hangout - a teen was murdered there 3 years ago. The park is lovely and kept immaculately. What's more, it's only about 1/2 mile from home. So... I attended the orientation, got fingerprinted and passed the background check, and have been out walking the park about 45 minutes, more or less, every day since. Walking around in the woods is great - counting Western Gray Squirrels, dogs out walking with their people, kids in the play yard, photographing gang tagging, picking up candy wrappers, etc. - it's all good stuff and I'm the healthier for it! - Barbara

Hello, Barbara--This sounds like a great community service/activity!
