2/28: favorite part
I'm doing an independent reading course in Greek with a student this semester; we get together once a week to go over his translations of portions of the Iliad. Today we read through the conversation between Achilles and his mother, Thetis, in book 1. It's beautiful and sad and interesting--my favorite part of book 1 for sure, and one of my favorite parts in the entire Iliad. It was great to have the opportunity to revisit it in the original.

I know I haven't commented before (although I have been reading your blog for ages), and usually don't if I don't have anything meaningful to say, but today's post just struck a key with me.
I'm a university student myself, and I am glad that there are still teachers out there who have the time - and enjoy! - to do individual reading courses with their students. I feel very fortunate that one of my teachers agreed to do an Old English reading class with me and some friends of mine, and I love to hear that you do something similar!

I love the chance to do independent readings; it feels so focused with just a student or two and the text--very intent and yet also less formal than a classroom environment. I'm jealous of your Old English reading class; it's something I've always wanted to learn.
